Meet Laura!

We take great pride in our hand-picked team of tutoring professionals.

Here's a little more about our tutor Laura!

AGE-RANGE SPECIALISM: PRIMARY YEARS. AS A TEACHING ASSISTANT AND QUALIFIED COUNSELLOR, LAURA SPECIALISES IN WORKING WITH CHILDREN WITH SPECIFIC LEARNING NEEDS.

WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND, LAURA?

I have been working with children for 23 years (since I was 17) it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.

I worked voluntarily in a school whilst I gained my childcare qualifications and started my first job working with a young student with cerebral palsy on a 1:1 basis. This boy rarely needed my support in class, so I became a Teaching Assistant whilst being available for him as and when he needed me.

The following September in (2000) I started a new job working with EAL children and SEN children in the school I am currently working in.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ST TUTOR?

I know what’s it’s like to struggle at school and I wanted to come up with strategies to provide individual learning experiences for children to help them grow, learn, achieve and develop confidence within.

One-to-one work is my favourite because you get to know exactly what the child needs; teaching and learning can then be carefully tailored – bespoke to the individual.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVOURITE BOOKS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN?

1. The Selfish Giant -Oscar Wilde

2. The Smartest Giant in Town -Julia Donaldson

3. Peace at Last -Jill Murphy

WHAT’S YOUR MOTTO FOR LIFE?

Live and let live: don’t judge. Children don’t (they just learn to from adults). Do something to make someone smile or laugh every day!
